How to Cancel GST Registration Online

If you no longer run your business, have closed operations, or your turnover has fallen below the GST threshold, you can apply for GST cancellation online. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Visit GST Portal

Go to the official GST portal:

Step 2: Log in to Your Account

Enter your:

  • Username

  • Password

  • Captcha

Then click Login.


Step 3: Go to Cancellation Option

After login, follow this path:

Services → Registration → Application for Cancellation of Registration


Step 4: Select the Reason for Cancellation

You will see a list of reasons. Choose the one that applies to you:

  • Business discontinued

  • Transfer of business

  • Change in business structure

  • No longer liable to register under GST

  • Closure of business

Select the appropriate reason.


Step 5: Fill in the Required Details

The portal will ask for:

  • Your date of business closure

  • Details of stock held (if any)

  • Liability on stock (if applicable)

  • Payment details (if any tax dues exist)


Step 6: Upload Supporting Documents (If Required)

Some cancellation reasons may need documents such as:

  • Business closure proof

  • Deed of dissolution

  • Transfer documents

Upload them in PDF or JPEG format.


Step 7: Verification & Submission

At the bottom, choose the verification method:

  • DSC (For companies/LLPs), or

  • EVC (OTP on registered mobile/email)

Click Submit.


Step 8: ARN Generation

After submission:

  • An ARN (Application Reference Number) is generated.

  • You can track the status using ARN.


Step 9: Approval by Tax Officer

The GST officer will review your application.
If everything is correct, your GSTIN will be cancelled, and an order will be issued.

🕒 Cancellation Timeline

Usually 7–30 days, depending on the officer’s workload and documentation.


❗Important: File All Returns Before Cancellation

Before applying, make sure:
✔️ All GST returns (GSTR-3B and GSTR-1) are filed
✔️ No tax liability is pending
✔️ ITC reversal on closing stock is done (if applicable)

Otherwise, cancellation may be rejected.
